Help me make it meaningful
Last year I made a joke with a friend. "Do you want to run to Newcastle?" Unfortunately she said yes. So here we are, training to run further than either of us has run before.
What we plan to do is run the Great North Walk approx 250km. It is as we discovered far from an original idea and the trip is known as the GNW250. The fastest known time is 1 day 13 hours. Which is crazy fast. We are currently planning to do it over 3 - 4 days.
Who we are:
Bronte - is a young lady who has dived straight into the world of Entrepreneurial start ups. As a single female she is creating a company from scratch in a world dominated by men. She is passionate about her company and cause, and is doing her best to change and improve her field. She is a lover of all adventure sports, and Latin dance.
David - is a Registered Nurse with over a decade of experience. He is a rock climber and Latin dancer. He is passionate about all adventures and occasionally takes up silly challenges like trying to complete multiple climbs in a day or ski a silly distance.
I (David) started running this year. My first run was 2km and afterwards I couldn't walk properly for 3 days because of leg soreness. 4 months later we ran 50km.
We have put in 8 months of training, of hard training... There has been huge emotional highs and lows. Levels of exhaustion that we have never dreamed about. Massive amounts of physical pain from broken toes to shin splints. And the moments of complete exhaustion.
The GNW250 is the ultimate journey of self discovery for both of us.
Why the Black Dog Institute? Because depression and suicide has been a huge part of my life growing up. I myself have my highs and lows, and there have been times in my life where I have hidden from friends and family because of the pain. Indeed mental health is one of the few areas that modern medicine seems to be actively losing.
As technology marches on, the problem only appears to be getting worse.
Our running journey feels very close to what I imagine the journey of depression would feel like. Lots of hard runs with no improvement, many days of running that feel so bad I wonder why I'm going backwards, and many days where I just want to burry my face in beer rather than get up and go for a run.
Help me create a meaningful moment for mental health as I work up a sweat, all for a great cause.
